Cub Scout Community Service Project  Benefits...
Local Children, Library Paws for Reading Program and St. Huberts Non-Profit

Paws For Reading, In The Bernardsville News:

PupKC reads to “Zeus’’ the Great Dane at the Library, as part of a “Paws for Reading’’ program supported by the local Cub Scout Pack. In the program, children practice reading aloud to certified therapy dogs like Zeus. Research shows that reading aloud to a nonjudgmental audience boosts confidence and improves fluency and is just plain FUN! Photo by local news reporter.

I was actively involved in Cub Scouts for five years before I moved up to Boy Scouts. I am thankful that my Mom was my Den Leader during that time.  She helped us create fun community service projects, between our Cub Scout Den and our local library.

In January, our Wolf Den met with the children's librarian. She explained the library’s  roll in the community and she shared one of the challenges they were having with a program called Paws for Reading.

Once a month St. Hubert’s certified therapy dogs visit the library to provide an  opportunity for kids to read to the dogs, as the non-judgmental audience. The library had been struggling with a low attendance.  The librarian believe this was  because there weren't not enough people who knew about the program.

Our Den brainstormed and came up with ideas on how to get the word out about the program. We thought it would be a good idea to create a poster, tell all of our friends, family, neighbors and school friends about the it.  We also got the word out to everyone else in our our Cub Scout Pack and asked them to give it a try.

Since we initiated our service program, attendance has increased. I have lots of fun reading to the dogs each month and helping our community library as well!

He entry was a creative construction project that incorporated STEAM and his interest in space exploration.

During the summer before I entered Kindergarten, Disney was running a creative contest related to the Miles From Tomorrowland cartoon on TV.  Mom read me the entry requirements for each of the categories and said, "Mommy, lets' do them all!" That's when I started discussing my ideas and searching the house for things we could build with.  I had so much fun crafting with Mom over the next two weeks.  Above is the photo of my completed missions projects. I was super excited to be one of the few winners that had their picture shown on the Disney Channel before the launch of the Miles From Tomorrowland Mission Mars show.
